Its purpose is to improve road safety and maintain high standards of driving within the transport industry. Who needs Driver CPC training? You need Driver CPC if you drive a lorry, bus, or coach professionally as the main part of your job. This generally applies to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes What are the different types of Driver CPC training? There are two types: Initial Driver CPC: For new drivers who need to pass a series of theory and practical tests to get their professional licence and qualify for their Driver CPC. Periodic Driver CPC: For existing professional drivers who must complete 35 hours of training every five years to keep their qualification valid. How many hours of training do I need? To maintain your Driver CPC qualification, you must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years. This training is typically delivered in 7-hour blocks. What happens if my Driver CPC expires? If your Driver CPC qualification expires, you are no longer legally permitted to drive professionally. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving professionally without a valid Driver CPC. To regain your qualification, you must complete the required 35 hours of periodic training. What topics are covered in the training? Periodic training covers a range of subjects designed to improve road safety and professional competence. This can include topics such as: Digital tachographs and drivers' hours Vehicle safety and checks Manual handling and safe loading Health and safety at work First aid and emergency procedures Eco-driving and fuel efficiency Do I need to pass a test for periodic training? No, periodic training does not have a pass or fail element. The focus is on attendance and participation in the course to refresh and update your skills and knowledge. How do I get my Driver Qualification Card (DQC)? Your DQC is a physical card that proves you hold a valid Driver CPC. It is automatically sent to the address on your driving licence after you have completed your 35 hours of training. You must carry this card with you at all times while driving professionally. What happens if I lose my DQC? You can apply for a replacement DQC through the relevant government authority (DVSA in the UK). There is a fee for a replacement card.
